3.3 Types of anchors

Home / Publications / Literature / Bookshelf / Maritime Handbook
Anchor Hall
- Anchor with pivoting legs; the main type of anchor for navy ships. The anchor (Fig. 3.3) consists of a spindle and a box cast together with two legs. The middle part of the box has a through oval hole where the thickened part of the spindle enters. This hole limits the deflection angle of the anchor legs (up to 45°). At the bottom of the spindle, a hole is drilled for the roller that attaches the spindle to the box. The spindle is prevented from falling out of the box by two pins, the holes for which are welded after installation of the pins. An anchor bracket is attached to the top of the spindle. Hall anchors are made of two types - with a rectangular spindle and with a round spindle. Hall anchors with a circular spindle have a shorter spindle length and are used on low-hulled ships. Disadvantages of Hall anchors: comparatively low holding force, possibility of getting jammed in the fairlead when lifting, and standing up against the hull plating in a spontaneous manner.

Anchor Matrosov
Anchor Matrosov (increased holding power) is the main type of auxiliary anchor for navy ships and anchor for small ships and boats. Anchor (Fig. 3.4) has two wide triangular legs, adjoining directly to the spindle, to the end of which the anchor bracket is attached. The gap between the legs is insignificant, and they are like one wide leg with a narrow slot for the spindle, which is attached to the legs by an axle and pins of the leg. On the sides of the anchor are gussets which act as a rod, preventing the anchor from toppling over. Matrosov anchors are made of three types: cast (Fig. 3.4) - from 25 to 1500 kg, welded (Fig. 3.5) - from 5 to 200 kg and boat welded (Fig. 3.6) - from 10 to 100 kg.

Fig. 3.6. Boat anchor: 1 - shackle; 2 - spindle; 3 - leg; 4 - stem (inflow); 5 - pin

Table 3.3.

Disadvantages of Matrosov anchors: the narrow space between the legs is often clogged with soil, which prevents the anchor legs from deflecting freely; the anchor, having turned out of the soil, does not enter it again, but keeps creeping; the anchor is unstable in the initial period when fetching on dense soil.

The Admiralty anchor (Fig. 3.7) consists of a spindle and two horns with legs cast together with the spindle. The thickened part of the spindle where it merges with the horns is called the trend. The top of the spindle has two holes: for attaching the anchor bracket and for the rod. The rod has thickenings at the ends to prevent the rod from burrowing into the ground when the anchor recoils. One end of the rod is bent at a right angle, allowing it to be laid along the spindle. The middle part of the rod has a shoulder and a hole for a wedge-shaped pin. In the Navy, the anchor is used for supplying dinghies.

Special anchors
. These include anchors: single-leg, four-leg and ice anchors.

A single-leg anchor (Fig. 3.8) is used by the Navy as a ground anchor to secure fixed-water structures. The weight and dimensions of single-legged anchors are not standardized. Anchor is a steel spindle cast or forged together with a horn, a leg and fitted with a rod.

Figure 3.8. One-legged anchor: 1 - spindle; 2 - horn; 3 - rod; 4 - leg

H e t t h e l a p p i n g anchor (Fig. 3.8. 3.9) weighing from 3 to 15 kg is called a cat. It consists of four horns with legs forged together with a spindle, to the upper end of which is attached an anchor bracket.

Figure 3.9. Four-legged anchor: 1 - shackle; 2 - spindle; 3 - horn; 4 - foot

The ice anchor (Fig. 3.10) is used when navigating ships in ice. It consists of a spindle, a horn with a foot and an anchor clamp.

How to draw an anchor step by step in pencil?

Step 1. Let's start with the "framework", namely, with two lines that form a cross. Here we will also outline the dimensions of our drawing. The height of the anchor should be about 2 times the width.

Step 2: At the upper end of the vertical line, draw a small circle. This is the future loop for the rope or chain (snatch).

Step 3: Now we want to move on to the bottom of our anchor. Here you need to draw a straight arc slightly wider than the horizontal line of the cross. At the ends of the arc are arrows, looking up.

Step 4. The schematic image is ready. Now you need to draw the anchor along the outline. To begin with, make another one inside the circle - a smaller diameter, so our loop will have a thickness.

draw an anchor step by step

Step 5: Draw the stems (the horizontal crossbar). They should also be given a little thickness. The ends of the crossbar should have thickenings of a rounded or pointed shape.

Step 6: Draw the vertical part. It is usually a bit thicker at the bottom.

Step 7. Now for the most difficult part, the anchor arcs. It is important to make them as symmetrical as possible. Start drawing from the tips. It is better to pull them up a bit and round them on the outside.

Step 8. Draw smooth lines from the tips to the lowest point. This will also be the pointed end.

Step 9. All that's left is to connect the arcs to the main vertical part of the anchor.

Here we have drawn the anchor! This is one of the easiest images of it. Now you can refine it, diversify and decorate it.
