Jellyfish piercing: features and recommendations for care

Piercing "jellyfish" - this is one of the most popular types of decorative piercings on the face. The hole and decoration is installed in the depression between the upper lip and the nasal septum. Typically, titanium, steel, Teflon, and less commonly, silver or gold labrets are used as jewelry, with only a balloon visible in the cavity. It looks very attractive and, as a rule, "jellyfish" is made by young girls who wish to attract the attention of the opposite sex to beautiful plump lips (as on the photo). Often, in parallel with the jellyfish, a piercing of the lower lip is made, in which a labret with a decorative ball is placed in the hollow between the chin and the lower lip. Symmetrical jewelry looks spectacular.

How is the upper lip piercing done?

This is a fairly simple procedure, taking no more than 10-15 minutes. It is desirable to carry out this manipulation in a specialized cosmetic salon, where sanitary requirements are carefully observed and sterile instruments are used. A medium-thick needle with a catheter is used for the procedure, allowing you to easily and painlessly insert the jewelry.

Since the area above the upper lip is quite sensitive area, endowed with many nerve endings. Puncture in this area can be quite painful, so before the procedure, the specialist usually suggests using lidocaine as a local anesthetic.

The actual procedure consists of the following steps:

  • The specialist marks the point above the lip with a special felt-tip pen;
  • The skin is disinfected with an anesthetic;
  • a special clip with a hole is used to clamp and retract the upper lip;
  • a needle with a catheter is used to perforate the skin and soft tissue through;
  • a piece of jewelry is inserted through the catheter, and a balloon is screwed on the surface above the lip;
  • the puncture area is re-treated with disinfectant.

After the manipulation, it is necessary to monitor hygiene, adhere to a certain diet and treat the skin and oral cavity regularly to prevent infection.

PERFORMING PUNCTURES

The procedure is performed in a specially designated office, with the necessary equipment, tools, preparations and materials. Sterility in the working room must be at the highest level. Working tools must be in an autoclave for sterilization. The master must perform the work in disposable gloves, with further sterilization of hands and working tools.

  • disinfection of the place for the future piercing is performed;
  • the marking is made;
  • anesthesia is applied;
  • the lip is grasped with a clamp;
  • a special needle is inserted through the canal;
  • insertion of an earring into the canal;
  • re-treatment of the place with antiseptic.

When performing the lower jellyfish, the implementation of the canal is accompanied by bleeding and painful sensations. The healing period lasts about four weeks.

MAINTENANCE RULES

Jellyfish piercing requires careful and regular treatment, because its inner part is located in the oral cavity. During the first time from the piercing some discomfort, problematic eating and problems with discussion are possible. But all problems pass quickly by getting used to the body to the foreign object.

After the piercing you should limit yourself to eating, drinking and smoking for the next four hours.

How to take care of the jellyfish piercing:

    Until the canal heals, limit the intake of acidic, spicy, hot, hard and cold foods;

Limit the use of alcoholic and low-alcoholic beverages;

Care for piercings

Healing takes a different amount of time for different people. If you follow the recommendations for the care of the piercing, it heals for 1.5-2 weeks, for some people the process takes about a month. To do this, you need to follow some simple recommendations:

  • four days after the piercing you need to avoid water, so it is desirable to refuse to wash and shower, and clean the face with a cotton disc with milk or other cosmetic means;
  • During the healing period (1-2 weeks) it is recommended to refrain from eating sour, salty, too hot food, which can cause irritation;
  • to prevent organic particles from getting into the wound, it is advisable to rinse your mouth after each meal;
  • The puncture area should be treated with an antiseptic solution without alcohol, along with it allowed to use wound healing agents with vitamin B or E;
  • It is advisable not to touch the jewelry with unwashed hands, not to rub the nose, in case of a runny nose use drying drops that prevent copious mucus secretion;
  • The jewelry should not be twisted, taken out and changed until the channel is formed.

Lip piercing is a very popular face piercing solution that catches the eye immediately. People do this kind of piercing for different reasons - someone wants to make his image more informal, someone craves a new sensation when kissing - the reasons may be different.

But it is clear that this decision will not go out of fashion for a long time and will enjoy steady success among young people (and not only) more than one generation. So if you live in St. Petersburg, be sure to contact our masters - and then you will look trendy and stylish.

Origin

The lip piercing has a long history. Originally it was made ritually. The first such piercings were found in the Neolithic period, they are attributed to the Ethiopian tribe Mursi.

Then the tradition spread throughout Africa, Brazil, and so on.

In ancient Rome, such piercing would have meant worshipping foreign gods, so it was forbidden.

But then the tradition of such piercings returned with renewed popularity.

Variations

There are several different variations of lip piercings, among which we can distinguish the main, most common ones. The first thing that can be different is exactly where the piercing is made.

For example, if the upper lip piercing is done, then it looks more optimistic, cheerful - sometimes it is even called a "smiley", because it is visible when a person smiles.

When a lower lip piercing is performed, it is visible all the time, and its "image" is more somber, serious.

So it is possible to create a certain image only by changing the location of the piercing. But this is not the only way to vary the implementation of this procedure. Other variations are also available:

  • Monroe - a type of piercing so named because it imitates a mole above the lip of a famous singer/actress, if it is made over another part of the lip, it is usually called "Madonna";
  • Medusa is a type of piercing in which a labret (that's the name of the decoration that is inserted into the lip) is placed in the middle of the lip groove, just under the septum of the nose.

You can also distinguish between vertical and horizontal piercing, piercing directly to the lip and its frenulum - the name speaks for itself. Other variations are also possible, depending on the wishes of the individual. So it's best to pre-study the photos of already existing examples to understand how this or that piercing will look.

The process

How is the lip piercing done? It is carried out with the help of a sterile catheter. With horizontal piercing, it is introduced parallel to the lip, with a vertical - it is usually done exactly in the center, starting from the lower boundary and ending with the upper vertical point.

After the puncture is made, a labret of suitable thickness is inserted into the lip. A ring version is also possible.

In any case, the jewelry should certainly be made of hypoallergenic material, which, for example, is titanium.

You can do multipoint lip, but you should not do more than two, otherwise the tissues will tighten during healing, which will interfere with the formation of canals.

Care

After the lip piercing is performed, for some time it requires special care. In particular, it is recommended to rinse your mouth several times a day with an antiseptic, as well as to make compresses on both sides of the piercing.

After the procedure has been performed for the first time, it is not recommended to eat any food for at least four hours - the exception is ice cream, after which you should definitely rinse your mouth. It is also forbidden to smoke and drink alcohol. The latter is undesirable even during the entire healing period.

Ideally, you should refrain from kissing for the first time because they can open the wound, potentially leading to infection.

As a result, lip piercing is not very painful, but a stylish and eye-catching method of facial jewelry, the cost of which is also not very high.

Possible complications

As with other types of piercings, the most common type of complication for "jellyfish" is considered to be infection. Bacteria can enter the tissue either during the procedure (for example, if the specialist does not sterilize the instrument thoroughly enough), or during the healing period.

A specific type of complication from jellyfish piercings is considered to be damage to the tooth enamel and gums above the upper front teeth. The metal object in constant contact with the teeth leads to microscopic cracks in which anaerobic bacteria accumulate, provoking tooth decay. Like other types of oral piercings, "jellyfish" can lead to loose teeth and other negative consequences, of which dentists warn.

The emergence of the trend

An unusual variety of piercing has its origins in the 1990s. Canadian stylist Carrick made similar piercings to his customers - photomodels and representatives of subcultures. This original version of the piercing became very popular among both sexes, and by the end of the 90s, thousands of people around the world were wearing jellyfish piercings.
The decoration gives the wearer a special character:

  • Daring, boldness;
  • mystery, mystery;
  • unconventional aesthetics;
  • A special style, an original image.

The name of the jellyfish piercing is explained by the shape of the jewelry, which is inserted into the septum of the nose. The visible area is shaped like a sphere on a leg, and inside the product is flat, resembling a nail head.

Contraindications

As with other types of piercings, the "jellyfish" has the following contraindications:

  • Acute illnesses accompanied by high body temperature and fever;
  • cancer diseases;
  • Allergies to anesthetics (if used, they can cause anaphylactic shock);
  • problems with blood clotting, tendency to bleed, taking anticoagulants (aspirin, etc.)
  • skin integrity disorders, scratches, rashes in the area of the proposed puncture;
  • Infectious diseases (including hepatitis B and C, HIV).

Girls are not recommended to get piercings during menstruation or pregnancy. During this period, there are significant hormonal changes that reduce blood clotting, as well as vulnerability to infections.

How to choose jewelry?

All modern types of piercings are performed using safe metals and alloys that do not oxidize in contact with air and do not cause rejection in contact with body tissues. These include:

  • medical steel;
  • titanium;
  • Teflon;
  • Zirconium.

Silver and gold are not recommended, especially immediately after the puncture, as they can cause suppuration and abscesses. After the puncture area has healed and the canal is formed, you can insert more complex jewelry - with crystals, rhinestones, flowers, beads. If the jewelry changes color (usually the silver changes colour), it is advisable to change it for another, by consulting an experienced piercer.

Does it hurt to do the procedure?

The entire procedure takes a few minutes, from the initial treatment to the insertion of the jewelry. Whether it hurts to pierce depends on the threshold of human sensitivity. The master will not refuse you the desire to use local anesthesia.

Classic jellyfish above the lip does not cause much pain and is often performed without the use of pain medication. There are no blood vessels or nerves that would respond with pain to the injury. Only discomfort is felt during the passage of the needle.

When performing the lower jellyfish, anesthesia is mandatory. Because this is the very center of the plexus of nerves and vessels and the procedure in this area is quite painful. Before visiting the doctor's office, you should visit an allergist to rule out any negative reactions to anesthesia. You should not be skeptical of this recommendation, because many of the application drugs can provoke swelling, itching and rash, which can lead to serious complications.

There will be pain after the procedure once the medication wears off.

Where to do the piercing?

The optimal option - a specialized salon, where qualified craftsmen with access to certified equipment work. The key requirement is to observe the rules of sterilization of instruments and to maintain the necessary sanitary and hygienic environment. The client has the full right to make sure that the instruments are sterile, without fear of offending the specialist. If there is the slightest doubt, it is better to go to another salon.

The master must observe the following requirements:

  • Use clean cotton disks to apply the anesthetic, or use a product in the form of a spray;
  • use only sterile needles, unpack them in the presence of the client to see;
  • keep the instruments in a sterile area (under a UV lamp);
  • work in disposable latex or rubber gloves, take new gloves from the package for each client.

If these requirements are met, the risk of tissue infection during the procedure is minimal. Otherwise, bacteria can enter the wound and develop an infection. Its symptoms are:

  • Increased pain in the puncture area;
  • swelling and edema of the upper lip;
  • Pus discharge;
  • thickening of tissues at the puncture site;
  • increase in body temperature;
  • symptoms of intoxication - weakness, headache.

In this case, it is recommended to urgently contact a doctor - a surgeon, cosmetologist, dermatologist. He should examine the area above the upper lip, if necessary - remove the jewelry, clean the wound, remove pus and disinfect tissues. Perhaps the doctor will prescribe local antibacterial agents or oral antibiotics. Jewelry in this case will have to be thrown out or replaced with another.

Requirements for the performer

A number of objective conditions that are important to observe when performing jellyfish piercing surgery:

  • The room must be sterile (medical room in the clinic);
  • all instruments are taken from sterile boxes;
  • the master must use disposable sterile gloves;
  • special surgical markers are used for markings;
  • antiseptic is actively used.
