How to draw an owl with a pencil step by step

Now we will look at drawing an owl with a pencil step by step. To draw an owl, we need to understand the structure of the feather and wings. Feathers come in a variety of small and fluffy ones that are located on the head, chest, and paws, medium sized ones that are at the top of the feather, and long ones that are at the middle and bottom of the wing.

Step 1: We need to draw a precise sketch. With thin lines we draw the outlines of the head, body and wing. Click on the image to enlarge it.

Step 2. Draw the beak, leg area and feathers.

Step 3. Draw eyes and pupils, they are incomplete circles. We now have to erase the outline (lighten it) and in its place by lines of different lengths create the appearance of feathers. Then we draw the paws and the trunk.

Step 4. In this drawing, the light source is on the left, so the shade is darker on the right. Add oblique shading lines on the head, representing the small, soft feathers. Pay close attention to the directions of the strokes, they are important because they help convey the illusion of depth of different shapes. Sketch feathers of different shapes and lengths on the wing. Add a few curved strokes on the feet of the paws to show the direction in which the tiny soft feathers grow.

Step 5. Remember that the hatching lines used to draw the feathers vary in length and shade. The outlines are not cut sharply, but rather feather-shaped (or uneven) to convey a more realistic appearance.

With pencil 2H, easily shade the feathers on the left and center parts of the paws, the lower part of the torso. With pencil 2B make an intermediate shadow on the right side. Then using pencils 2B and 4B add darker shades of feathers on the lower part of the body, on the right shoulder, under the beak and under the wing. Draw a circle around the perimeter of the iris as an outer rim.

Step 6. Outline these outer rims with pencil 2B. Use pencil 6B to shade the pupil, leaving a glare and draw a darker shade on the beak.

Step 7. Using a 2H and HB pencil, fill in the eye and beak of the owl.

Step 8: Use hard pencils to add more strokes to all areas of the head. Use 2H for the lighter areas and 2B and 4B for the darker areas. Add some tiny ovals to the feathers on the forehead and the sides of the head. The following picture shows the finished look of these ovals and in enlarged resolution. If you want to make some of them stand out more, just go over them with your eraser to show and highlight the center parts of each.

Step 9: Use a sharpened hard pencil and short strokes to draw soft down feathers on the owl's chest and paws.

Step 10. Shade the feathers on the tail of the owl. Each feather has a darker shade on the right that flows into a lighter shade on the left. Add diagonal lines to the individual feathers. Look closely at the drawing and notice that the diagonal lines drawn on each of the feathers make the shading complete and emphasize the details.

Step 11. Shade the feathers in the upper area of the wing, with the area at the top darker as the shadow from the owl's head falls.

Step 12: Use pencils of different softness and hatch lines of different lengths to capture the texture of the feathers in the upper part of the wing. Individual feathers have light areas on the tips.

Step 13. Add dark shadows to the claws, while leaving room for highlights. Use shading with different lines to create the texture of the branch.

Step 14. If necessary, add more lines at your discretion to make the drawing look complete. Use the eraser to create light areas, use the darker areas for more shading. Date and sign the drawing.
