How to properly pierce the septum at home

  • Main
  • Piercing

Septum is a type of horizontal nasal piercing in the area of the tip between the nasal septum and cartilage. During the procedure, nerve endings and blood vessels are not traumatized, which is beneficial to the recovery and engraftment process. The main thing is to get the opening done right, and many trust only professionals. But in the absence of the opportunity to do in the salon, some decide to pierce the septum at home.

Features of the piercing

Septum piercing is in the category of popular varieties and is in second place after earlobe piercings. The earring is placed in the area between the nasal septum and the cartilage at the tip. The procedure is quick and the hole heals without any problems.
This method of facial adornment has historical roots. Scientists have been able to establish that even 1.5 thousand years BC, the inhabitants of India wore a variety of products in the nose. They were an integral part of the rituals. There was a belief among women that the earring would help to give birth easily.

Nasal septal puncture must be carefully planned. The procedure should not be performed in diseases of the ENT organs, causing nasal congestion, any signs of a cold, high fever and allergic runny nose. The following contraindications to all types of piercings should be considered:

  • diabetes mellitus;
  • attacks of epilepsy;
  • poor blood clotting;
  • Allergic reactions to metal alloys;
  • tendency to form keloid scars;
  • skin diseases.

Consult your physician before the procedure to identify contraindications and prevent complications. If you ignore the prohibitions, there is a high risk of inflammation, suppuration and rejection.

What is the appeal of septum piercings, who does it suit?

There is no individual recipe for who it suits and who it does not, everything depends on preferences and tastes, there are no limits. However, we must remember one detail: The septum visually lengthens the nose.Therefore it is necessary to choose the jewelry carefully.

The piercing is suitable for both girls and guys. Depending on the earring, you can change the style of appearance - from delicate and elegant to brutal and aggressive.

А one of the features is the ability to hide the visibility of the piercing, while not unscrewing the balls. It is noteworthy that none of the other subspecies has this feature. In order to hide the earring, you need to twist it up or down. Depending on the height of the piercing, apply a little pressure to allow the jewelry to pass behind the nasal cartilage. After such manipulations it will be physically impossible to notice the piercing.

Often owners of a septum encounter the problem of inability to unscrew the balls - this occurs either because the twist is too tight, or "drying" of the balls. In such a situation, do not panic, because there are several ways to solve the problem. The safest is to contact a master. The second is to soak the earring in chlorhexidine. The third will do in a hopeless situation - with all the care you need to use pliers.

It happens that such a problem arises from ignorance of the directions in which you need to twist the balls. If you need to remove the decoration - turn them to the right side.

Home tools for piercing

In order for a puncture made in the home to heal well, the hole must be made correctly. In order to form a beautiful and accurate hole, a certain set of tools is required.

What you need to buy:

  • A piercing needle with a diameter of 14-16 mm. Many craftsmen advise making a septum piercing at home with a catheter, but the catheter is large and tears the skin, leaving microcracks that will not heal well.
  • Septum clamp. A special instrument made of hypoallergenic materials. Necessary for gripping the skin fold, protecting the septum from injury, and forming a proper canal.
  • Sterile surgical marker.

preparation Miramistin

Also for piercing you will need an antiseptic - Miramistin, Chlorhexidine or diluted medical alcohol, a few cotton disks, a large mirror.

Negative consequences after tongue piercing

Tongue piercing most often provokes the following complications:

  • Speech disorders, lisping;
  • severe throbbing pain;
  • damage to tooth enamel with jewelry, chipping, cracking;
  • Difficulties in chewing food;
  • atrophy of the taste buds, resulting in a decreased sense of taste;
  • impaired blood supply, anemia.

How to pierce correctly

If you decide to pierce the septum yourself, be sure to prepare psychologically. There is no nasal anesthesia, as the pain is tolerable and lasts a couple of minutes. The main thing is to follow all the recommendations step by step and not to neglect the rules of asepsis. Home piercing is dangerous because it is difficult to carry out complete disinfection of tools, and there is a high risk of getting an infection. In salons, sterilization is carried out in a special autoclave device, at home you should boil the clamps and earring and treat with antiseptic.

How to properly pierce the septum yourself at home:

  1. When the instruments have been sterilized, place them on clean gauze near the workplace.
  2. Nose is treated with antiseptic in the place of the future hole, be sure to lubricate the inner and outer side.
  3. A marking is made.
  4. Tweezers pulled away the skin. The holes are placed exactly according to the markings. Make sure to capture the right area, cartilage and septum should not be in the puncture zone.
  5. A canal is formed in a steady, quick movement. The needle enters at right angles to the nose.
  6. Without taking out the stabbing section, insert the clasp of the earring into the hollow part and pass it into the hole.
  7. Clasp the earring.
  8. Treat with antiseptic.

During the passage of the needle, some people have tears, a drop of blood may stand out. You should not be frightened, this is a normal reaction of the body to the injury.

If the wrong septum is punctured, it will be uneven, the ornament will stick out strongly and complications in the form of inflammation and rejection will soon begin. Before starting the process, experts advise to study the details of the photo, so as not to make mistakes.

How to make piercings at home?

Many people want to make a beautiful and high-quality piercing, not everyone wants to pay for it. The temptation is great: in the drugstore you can buy everything you need for the procedure, and on the Internet you can find detailed instructions. Well, if you are confident in your abilities - we will try to help you before the situation heated up and you have not read too much on the Internet. So, you decided not to overpay and make yourself a piercing yourself. Is it possible to do it?

What do you need for a piercing at home?

Of course you can do it. For this you will need at least the jewel itself, a sterile catheter larger in diameter than the jewel itself, sterile absorbent cotton, sterile gloves, sterile gauze, plaster, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol (or vodka) and Miramistin (saline solution as a last resort). All of these things can probably be bought at the nearest pharmacy.

The next step is to treat the jewelry. You still can't sterilize it in an autoclave (otherwise you wouldn't be reading this article), so try boiling the piece for a while and rubbing it with alcohol.

Then you're faced with a dilemma - which room to do the piercing in? On the one hand, the bathroom probably has a large mirror and the sink is convenient to put a set of young piercer (although we highly discourage this: can you imagine how many bacteria on the sink?). On the other hand, you can at least sit in the room, but the fact that there is no mirror there, and scrubbing the carpet of blood is also not the most pleasant thing to do.

Sequence of action or why you won't succeed

Let's say you've solved the issue by sitting down in your room and putting a mirror in front of you and putting napkins or newspapers on the floor. Well, that's probably the best option in this situation. Now put on gloves, mark the puncture point. Next - insert the needle exactly at a 90 degree angle to the skin if you want to pierce the lobe or cartilage. If you want to make a more complicated piercing, for example, industrial, you will have to put the ornament to the ear and make a marking exactly on it - the piercing must be on one line.

Next - inhale and insert the needle. I must say that people often think that if you pierce the skin slowly, the pain will be less. And the body will reflexively make you do exactly that, although in reality you have to do it quickly.

Pull out the needle and insert the decoration into the plastic tube from the catheter - if, of course, you are lucky enough to get it through. If you manage to find a piercing needle, the jewelry is inserted into it and the needle is pulled out from the back. Next, you have to try to put a twist on it, fasten the ring, etc.

In the case of nose piercing, lip piercing and genital piercing, the situation is even worse: you physically cannot insert the needle at the right angle and correctly insert the jewelry. And when piercing the wings of the nose and septum, your eyes get very teary, and you won't be able to see what's going on in the mirror.

The piercing is done - what's next?

Be that as it may, the resulting puncture should be liberally poured with hydrogen peroxide to flush out the blood - an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. At the same time, you should not be too zealous: it is harmful to pull a fresh puncture unnecessarily. Then wash the puncture with Miramistin or saline solution and seal the plaster. I guess that's it.

By the way, I bet you didn't know that:

1. In fact, sterility by boiling is out of the question, because HIV and Hepatitis C viruses die when sterilized in an autoclave for at least 20 minutes at 132 degrees? The same goes for alcohol: it degreases the surface, it does not sterilize it. Can you guess what the procedure could cost you in the conditions described above?

2. Lack of special tools like professional needles of the right diameter, disinfecting surgical scrub, sterile gloves, etc. directly affects the quality of the procedure - and your well-being (as well as the "well-being" of the puncture). The same goes for surgical steel jewelry: rejection, festering, and constant pain are commonplace under these conditions.

3. It is good if you only pierce the ear, which has no arteries and veins. But if you try to pierce your tongue, it can end very badly: if you pierce unevenly, you can hit a major artery or vein. This can be fatal from loss of blood if an ambulance is not called in time. You can also nick a vein if you do not feel it when marking the puncture. You can also nick a muscle, of which the tongue is mostly composed. In this case the puncture will be 3-5 times harder, longer and more painful to heal.

How's that for you? Probably not very much, even if you really want to save money.

The choice of jewelry

The most common designs for septum earrings are rings, circulars and rods.Masters recommend decorating a fresh hole with a rod diameter of at least 1.2 mm. The right size will help heal faster and prevent damage to the wound. If you insert a ring or horseshoe, only part of the piece will be visible, about 2/3.

In the case where the puncture needs to be hidden from view, a small, beautiful retainer is used. Its ends are hidden inside, and the device itself is flesh-colored and made of acrylic, bioflex or bioplastic.

To prevent rejection of the earring it is necessary to choose the right material from which it is made. An important condition is maximum biocompatibility with the body. It is recommended to insert pieces of titanium, platinum, brass, Teflon, plastic into a fresh hole. Replacement with jewelry is allowed only after complete healing.

How long does the piercing heal and how do you know if there are complications?

Fresh piercing goes through three stages: inflammatory, active healing, and restorative. The duration of each stage depends on the location in which the hole is made. For example, a nose piercing heals for 1-2.5 months, an eyebrow for 2-3 months, and a tongue piercing for 3-4 months. Read more about the healing time in our separate article.

To understand that complications have begun to develop in the area of the puncture, will help the first signs:

  • Too much redness in the area of the puncture;
  • itching;
  • pain;
  • Feeling of heat in the wound area and an increase in body temperature;
  • purulent discharge.

Consequences of failed belly button piercings

The most common complication after belly button piercing is the rejection of the ornament. Happens if the body does not accept the decoration and tries with its own forces to get rid of it - to push it out of the wound.

It can also occur:

  • disruption of the earring or trauma to the wound - the abdominal area is constantly in contact with items of clothing, which can easily damage the piercing;
  • Stretching of the piercing - if the piercing is too small or close to the edge, a heavy piece of jewelry can enlarge it excessively, and the consequences will have to be corrected in the surgeon's office;
  • Stretch marks (stretch marks) on the abdomen - a frequent complication, appears during pregnancy in women who have previously had a belly button piercing.

Nose Piercing

How to deal with complications after piercings

At the first signs of improper healing, it is necessary to contact the attending physician and consult with the master. Timely treatment will help to avoid serious consequences and stop the pathological process.

Before visiting a doctor, you can independently:

  • To wipe the place with the decoration with an alcoholic solution;
  • apply to the wound a cotton swab soaked in antiseptic (e.g., Furacilin or Chlorhexidine);
  • apply a gauze swab dipped in Levomecol or Tetracycline ointment.

Microdermal on collarbone

Consequences of unsuccessful ear piercing

Earlobe piercing rarely causes complications, more often problems arise from the piercing of cartilage. Cartilage tissues heal for a long time, are painful, often reject the earring and fester. Benign tumors can form on them, which must be surgically removed. Unsuccessful piercing can lead to prolapse of the ear cartilage, which will have to be corrected through plastic surgery.

There are many nerve endings in the ear area. If they are hit, it can cause paralysis of the facial nerve. If the piercing procedure is seriously flawed, hearing loss can occur.
